If you were to roll out your lungs like pastry dough, they would stretch the length of a tennis court — over 23 meters of potential, folded neatly inside your torso. That’s how much space lives inside you, quietly, faithfully, waiting to be used. Our bodies are not small. Our presence is not small.
We’ve just come to forget that we are built to take up space — not just physically, but audibly, relationally, emotionally.
The voice is one of the most vital ways we claim space in the world. It’s the internal equivalent of unfurling — of saying, here I am. When our voices are silenced, dismissed, or underused, it’s as if our inner world starts to collapse inward. Shrinking. Tightening. We learn, sometimes subtly, that it’s safer to be small. To be agreeable. To go unheard.
But our voice is more than just sound. It is the auditory boundary of individuation. It communicates this is who I am, this is how I feel, this is where I stand. To use your voice is to exist with intention. To breathe and shape that breath into meaning. And just like any muscle, your voice needs practice — not just to sound good or polished, but to feel familiar in your own mouth. Your croaky, sleepy morning voice is not broken — it’s simply unpracticed. Stretch it.
Speak to yourself in the mirror
Sing in the shower
Whisper your own name with reverence - or simply write it out again and again
Say your vowels [I’m serious]
Record voice memos on your phone talking to yourself - there’s something that hits different having it recorded. Even if you never listen to it, even if you delete it right away, it is an intentional self witnessing.
If you’ve wanted to start journalling but have felt stuck, this is my favourite place to start and return to.
Record a meditation in your own voice. You can listen to guided meditations but your body responds to your voice in a unique way, like hearing your name called from across the room. Your body perks up.
This is a mad lib outline to build your own manifestation meditation. Find some zen nature sounds for the background and hit record on your phone! Don’t overthink it [is easier said than done]
There is something sacred in recognizing your own voice — in hearing your name spoken by a voice that sounds like home. Your voice is a living signature. A sonic fingerprint. The more you use it, the more it becomes a bridge — between your inner world and the outer one.
So start where you are. Speak even when your voice trembles. Even if it’s quiet, even if it’s unsure — practice making sound. Practice taking up space. There are 23 meters of you waiting to be heard.
