When addressing you as the self, I am not talking of a highest or even a true self because the self is not singular. The self is not fixed, it is always growing, evolving and becoming. The authentic self is a crystal with many sides - each side with many facets. Our goal in individuation, in orienting towards wholeness, is not sameness. Living authentically is developing an integrity, an alignment between our inner desires and outer actions. In integrating the shadow and becoming authentic, life does not become easier.
It’s the same thing I tell clients who are getting sober - life is not easier when you’re sober. It is actually way harder. You have to feel all the things you always numbed yourself to and you have to be present for them. But you will be present for life. You will be living. Life is harder when you’re authentic - people in your life may not like your choices but they will be your choices. Your relationships may change, but then, they were only in relationship to your persona anyway. An authentic life is difficult but it is your life.
